What does a whole-home generator cost in Sarasota?
A permanently installed standby generator usually runs about $6,000 to $11,000 installed for a typical home, according to national cost data. Bigger homes, longer gas runs, and a new propane tank push it higher. A portable generator with a proper transfer switch costs about $900 to $4,000 all in. No one publishes Sarasota-specific generator prices, so the ranges below are national. The local factors that move them are explained after the table.
After a few hurricane seasons, plenty of Sarasota and Manatee homeowners have decided they're done sitting in a 90-degree house waiting for the power to come back. A generator is a real purchase, though, and the unit itself is only part of the price. Here's what the whole job costs and where the money goes.
Typical prices (national ranges)
| Standby generator, installed (whole job) | $6,000–$11,000 |
| Standby unit only, 13–16 kW (homes under ~1,500 sq ft) | $3,000–$4,500 |
| Standby unit only, 17–20 kW (~1,500–3,000 sq ft) | $4,000–$6,000 |
| Standby unit only, 22–25 kW (~3,000–5,000 sq ft) | $4,500–$12,000 |
| Installation labor and materials | $3,000–$5,000 |
| Automatic transfer switch | $400–$2,500 |
| Gas line run | $15–$50+ per foot |
| Propane tank (if there's no natural gas) | $400–$1,800 |
| Concrete or composite pad | $150–$400 |
| Permits | $80–$450 |
| Portable generator with transfer switch or inlet | $900–$4,000 total |
Ranges are from HomeGuide's 2025 generator guide. For comparison, Angi puts the average generator project at $5,156, with most homeowners paying $1,512 to $8,803. That figure includes portable units. Fixr's older 2022 data puts whole-house systems at $10,000 to $20,000. The spread tells you something real: the site and the fuel decide the price as much as the generator does. The only number that counts is the written quote.
What moves the price
Size, which in Florida means your AC. Central air is the big load. A generator that has to start and run your AC needs to be larger than one that only keeps the fridge, lights and fans going. Ask the electrician to do a load calculation, not a guess based on square footage. Load-shedding modules can let a smaller unit handle the AC by switching off other loads while it runs.
Fuel. Natural gas is the cheapest to run. HomeGuide estimates $30–$40 a day for a 20 kW unit on natural gas and $150–$170 on propane. Angi puts propane at around $220 a day. If there's no gas main on your street, you'll need a propane tank, which adds to the installed price and to what each storm costs you.
Distance. Every foot of gas pipe and wire between the generator, the meter and your electrical panel costs money. A unit right next to the panel is the cheap case.
Transfer switch and panel work. A whole-home automatic switch costs more than a switch that covers only essential circuits. An older or full panel may need work first. For panel prices, see our electrical pricing guide.
Sarasota and Manatee notes
Permits are part of the job. Sarasota County files standby generators (LP, natural gas, or gas-fueled) under its Accessory permit type. Manatee County's generator checklist asks for a one-line electrical diagram, a load calculation that shows the fuel source, spec sheets for the generator and transfer switch, a gas piping drawing, and a site plan with setbacks. A real quote includes that paperwork. If a contractor suggests skipping it, walk away.
Flood zones change where it sits. Sarasota County notes that exterior equipment in flood zones that's damaged by flooding must be elevated when it's replaced. The Property Appraiser's site shows your required elevation. A generator that floods in a surge is no help, so ask about elevation up front. A raised platform costs more than a slab pad.
HOAs can set the look, not the yes or no. Florida law (§720.3035, as amended in 2024) counts exterior fixed generators as hurricane protection. HOAs have to adopt specifications for them and can't deny an application that meets those specifications. They can still require placement, screening, or a uniform look. Get your HOA's specs before the installer draws the site plan.
Salt air is hard on equipment. Near the bay and the Gulf, ask about the enclosure material, corrosion protection, and how often the unit should be serviced. Angi puts routine maintenance at about $80 to $300.
How to pick a pro
You want a licensed electrical contractor, plus a licensed gas contractor or plumber for the fuel side if the electrician doesn't do it. Many generator dealers handle both. Ask:
- Will you do a written load calculation, and what will this unit run during an outage, including the AC?
- Does the quote include the permit, the pad or platform, the gas line or tank, and the transfer switch?
- Are you an authorized dealer for this brand, and who handles warranty service and annual maintenance?
- How long from signed contract to running generator? Lead times stretch after every named storm.
Red flags
Watch for a price quoted by square footage with no load calculation, and for anyone who offers to skip the permit. The first gets you a generator that can't run your AC. The second can cause trouble with your insurer and when you sell. Also be wary of storm-week pressure to sign for a unit that won't be installed for months.
Common questions
How much does a whole-home generator cost in Sarasota?
National data puts a standby generator at about $6,000 to $11,000 installed for a typical home. Larger units, long gas runs, and propane tanks push it higher. Local quotes vary with your site, fuel, and flood-zone requirements. Get at least two written quotes.
What size generator do I need for a Florida home?
It depends mostly on your central AC and whether you want the whole house powered. HomeGuide's rough guide is 17–20 kW for 1,500 to 3,000 square feet, but an electrician's load calculation is the real answer.
Is natural gas or propane better?
Natural gas is far cheaper per day of runtime if it's available at your street. HomeGuide notes that gas service can be shut off in severe storms. Propane works anywhere but costs more to run and needs a tank.
Do I need a permit for a generator in Sarasota or Manatee County?
Yes. Sarasota County handles standby generators as an Accessory permit, and Manatee County has its own generator submittal checklist. Your contractor should pull the permit.
Can my HOA stop me from installing a generator?
Under Florida's 2024 HOA law, an HOA has to adopt specifications for exterior fixed generators and can't deny an application that meets them. It can still regulate location and appearance.
