✳ Sarasota pricing guide · AC repair or replace

Should you repair or replace your AC in Sarasota?

Repair it if the system is under about 10 years old and the fix is a part like a capacitor, contactor or fan motor. Those usually run $100–$700. Think hard about replacing it if the repair is a compressor or coil ($1,800–$4,500 out of warranty). Also think about it if the system runs on R-22, or if the repair cost times the system's age tops $5,000. These are national figures. We couldn't find published Sarasota repair prices.

Our HVAC pricing guide covers what a new system and a tune-up cost around here. This guide is about the call you make when a tech is standing in your driveway with a quote: fix it, or start over?

Typical repair prices (national ranges)

Service call / diagnosis$75–$200
Capacitor$100–$250
Contactor$200–$450
Clogged drain line flush$75–$250
Condenser fan motor$200–$700
Circuit board$150–$700
Find and fix a refrigerant leak$200–$1,500
Recharge: R-410A / older R-22$100–$320 / $180–$600
Blower motor (out of warranty)$500–$2,300
Air handler$1,500–$3,400
Compressor: under / out of warranty$600–$1,200 / $1,800–$2,800
Evaporator coil: under / out of warranty$1,000–$2,500 / $2,500–$4,500

Figures are from HomeGuide's AC repair guide. Trane's list runs a little wider, with capacitors at $100–$400 and evaporator coils at $1,000–$5,000 or more. For comparison, HomeGuide puts a full AC replacement at $5,000–$8,300 nationally. The only number that counts is the written quote.

The rules of thumb

The $5,000 rule. Multiply the repair cost by the system's age in years. If the answer is over $5,000, replacing is worth pricing out. CBS News gives the example: a $500 repair on a 12-year-old system is $6,000, so get a replacement quote. A $400 repair on a 7-year-old system is $2,800, so fix it.

The 50% rule. HomeGuide suggests replacing if a repair costs at least half the price of a new system.

Age. HomeGuide says a well-kept AC lasts about 12 to 15 years, and less where it's very hot. CBS cites 15 to 20 years for many central systems. FPL lists "10 years or older" as a sign it's time to upgrade.

What broke. CBS makes a fair point: a capacitor is not a compressor. Frequent repairs, rising bills and humidity problems also point toward replacing. A cheap part failing on an old system doesn't mean the system is done. A compressor or coil failing on an old system usually means it's time to price a new one. HomeGuide notes compressors can't be repaired on site, only replaced.

Sarasota and Manatee notes

R-22 systems are on borrowed time. The EPA ended new production and import of R-22 on January 1, 2020. Existing systems can still be serviced with recycled or stockpiled refrigerant, but HomeGuide puts R-22 at $90–$150 a pound, against $50–$80 for R-410A. If your system uses R-22 and has a leak, that's a strong case for replacing it.

R-410A systems can still be fixed. A July 2026 EPA rule dropped the installation deadline for new R-410A systems made from parts built before 2025. Repair parts for existing R-410A systems remain available. New systems that don't qualify have to use lower-impact refrigerants. Ask which refrigerant any replacement quote uses.

Efficiency rules apply to new installs. Florida is in the Department of Energy's Southeast region. Split-system ACs installed since January 1, 2023, must meet at least 14.3 SEER2 under 45,000 Btu/h, or 13.8 SEER2 at or above it. If someone offers to swap only the outdoor unit on an old system, ask whether the new pairing is a rated combination that meets that standard.

Money back is limited. The federal 25C tax credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. FPL customers can get a $200 instant rebate on a complete new system rated 15.2 SEER2 or higher. It has to be installed by an FPL-approved contractor, and it shows up as a credit on the invoice.

Permits. Sarasota County treats an AC change-out as mechanical permit work. The installer should pull the permit.

Insurance notices. HVAC is one of the four systems in a four-point inspection. Many insurers require one on homes over 20 years old, so a very old unit can come up when you renew or switch insurers.

Don't forget the ducts. HomeGuide says ductwork lasts 10 to 20 years and puts duct replacement at $1,400–$5,600. In a hot attic, leaky ducts can make a new unit look bad. Ask for a duct check with any replacement quote.

How to pick a pro

Hire a licensed HVAC contractor, and ask the same questions whether they're quoting a repair or a replacement:

  • What exactly failed, and can you show me the part or the readings?
  • Is the part under the manufacturer's warranty, and what would labor cost?
  • How old is my system, and what refrigerant does it use?
  • If I replace, does the quote include the permit, a load calculation and a duct inspection?

Red flags

Watch for a replacement pitch before anyone has diagnosed the problem. Watch for refrigerant "top-offs" with no leak search: HomeGuide notes an AC only needs refrigerant if it leaks. And watch for anyone who won't put the failed part and the price in writing. A second opinion costs one service call.

Common questions

Is it worth fixing a 15-year-old AC?

For a cheap part, often yes. For a compressor or coil, usually not. Use the $5,000 rule: a $1,000 repair on a 15-year-old system scores $15,000, well past the line.

How much does a new compressor cost compared to a new AC?

HomeGuide puts an out-of-warranty compressor at $1,800–$2,800 and a whole new AC at $5,000–$8,300 nationally. On an older system, the compressor alone can be a third or more of the cost of a new one.

Can I still get R-22 refrigerant?

Yes, but only recycled or stockpiled supply, since 2020. It costs more than R-410A, and repeated recharges on a leaking R-22 system add up fast.

Do I have to replace my R-410A system?

No. Repair parts are still available, and a 2026 EPA rule removed the deadline for installing new R-410A systems built from pre-2025 parts.

Are there rebates for a new AC in Sarasota?

FPL offers a $200 instant rebate on qualifying systems rated 15.2 SEER2 or higher, installed by an FPL-approved contractor. The federal 25C tax credit ended after 2025.

Do I need a permit to replace my AC?

Yes. In Sarasota County an AC change-out is a mechanical permit, and the contractor normally pulls it.
